Reflective Practice Sessions

We are excited to invite you to participate in the new Reflective Action Learning Forum Series, designed to support professionals like you in deepening your reflective practice. Reflective practice is critical in care and social work to enable professionals to bring safely their whole selves to their work, yet it all too often falls down from the list of priorities under the many demands of the work. This event series will help build a reflective work culture and enhance reflective capacity, ultimately benefiting the children and young people in your care.

About the Event Series

Regular, in-depth reflection is essential for professionals working with care-experienced children and young people. This series offers a structured space to reflect, combining the principles of action learning sets with a deeper exploration of thoughts, feelings, and motivations. You will gain new perspectives, increase self-awareness, and strengthen your ability to handle challenging situations—particularly around restrictive practices.

Based on a research project by the University of Strathclyde, SPRAG and Celcis, the reflective sessions were prompted by The Promise Scotland,  and its bid to reduce, and even eliminate, the use of physical restraint in residential child care in Scotland. SPPA would like to share this format with all its members, across the five nations of the UK. RALF groups have already demonstrated powerful outcomes, including:

  • Enhanced skills in asking reflective questions
  • Greater clarity in managing physical restraint and emotional distress
  • Improved emotional processing and resilience
  • Deeper self-awareness and understanding of the vulnerability inherent in reflective practices

The sessions are a safe and protected space where you will be supported to find your own solutions to dilemmas you encounter in your work. Our facilitator, Cecile Remy—a SPPA trustee and Reflection and Action Learning Forum (RALF) facilitator—will guide the participants to support each other in gaining insights into the issues and dilemmas they bring to the group.

Dates and Commitment

The series consists of seven sessions running from December 2024 to June 2025:

  • Friday, 9-10.30 AM
    • 6th December 2024
    • 10th January 2025
    • 14th February 2025
    • 14th March 2025
    • 11th April 2025
    • 9th May 2025
    • 13th June 2025

Each session is 90 minutes, and we ask participants to commit to attending regularly, given the importance of trust, safety, and consistent participation in a reflective forum of this nature. The first session will introduce the RALF principles and the structure of the following sessions.

What to Expect

This is a space for shared reflection on the impact of your work, particularly the challenges tied to using restrictive practices. Each session follows a similar structure, where participants support each other in gaining insights into dilemmas they encounter in their work. It may involve silences, but those moments can be transformational, offering new ways to process emotions and experiences that may feel difficult or overwhelming. Confidentiality is key—what happens in the group stays within the group.
We will provide you with a participation certificate for your training records upon completion of the sessions.
