Session 3: The Art of Creative Mentoring with The Mighty Creatives

In this SPPA Practice Oasis session, we will be exploring the four following questions:

• What is Creative Mentoring and how does it work?
• What Social Pedagogical practices sit at the core of Creative Mentoring, and what do they look like in practice?
• Why is creativity so important in Social Pedagogy?
• How can resources and toolkits enhance creative engagement for children and young people in a person-centred way?

About The Mighty Creatives:

The Mighty Creatives (TMC) are a national charity that exists to provide creative youth services and mentoring for the most unheard children and young people in society, including those who are care-experienced, facing adversity, challenges or disadvantage.

TMC’s dedicated team, work closely with various youth services and teams, including Local Authorities, Virtual Schools, schools, alternative provision settings, residential homes, cultural organisations, CAMHS, and Prevent services. They have heaps of experience (more than 13 years!) in the creative sector, working with children and young people, and in the community.

About Creative Mentoring:

Creative Mentoring is TMC’s award-winning core service, providing one-one support for children and young people who are care-experienced, facing adversity, disadvantage, and/or challenges.

It’s a tried-and-tested model of creative intervention based on a social pedagogical ethos and person-centred approach. TMC put young people at the heart of the service – and are continually developing the practice in direct response to needs of their beneficiaries through regular consultation with youth services and young people themselves. Their trained Creative Mentors use their experience as creative practitioners and of youth work to empower mentees to discover their sense of self, purpose, belonging, and a world of possibilities – both now and in the future. By building trusted relationships with their Creative Mentors, young people are supported in their personal, social, and emotional development, and education attainment, to transform their lives.

Emily York

Emily York is The Mighty Creatives’ Youth Programme Manager and has been with the organisation for 5 years. Emily’s practice stems from experience within the UK’s Education Sector, having worked in and with many education settings in and across the Midlands, including Pupil Referral Units, SEND settings and mainstream education settings to name a few. Emily’s passions lie with children and young people’s voices, ensuring that those that are ‘hard to hear’ are provided with spaces to be listened to, feel validated, influence change and have continued meaningful engagements to explore their potential and future possibilities. Emily has also previously worked as a freelance practitioner, delivering community and socially engaged arts-based programmes in areas that experience disadvantage in the East Midlands. She has been core to the development of Creative Mentoring over the last 5 years, and has supported the development of the work to become one of TMC’s core programmes.
